Sarah Davenport
My work is about the afterlife of objects.
I make pictures of scratched, worn, ordinary stuff; marked by memory and experience.

Much of my work is concerned with exploring the dual meaning
of the word belongings; that is, not just material possessions, but
how we are all attached to places and people, to the past and to
our languages and cultural traditions.

I draw fast from the TV, mainly from news reports. My pictures are
based on momentary glimpses of things in the background to often
violent events. From my constant drawings I choose and combine the
objects I paint for how they look, never to prompt shock or nostalgia.

I am not really interested in narrative, you can make up your own stories.
I am interested in the shapes, edges and surfaces of the things that surround us.
